During pregnancy, elevated progesterone levels cause the smooth muscles to relax, which in turn reduces food intake through your intestines.

Another cause of constipation during pregnancy is due to increase in water absorption from the intestine and leads to constipation. Your rapidly growing uterus, which compresses your intestines and pushes your stomach up, can also contribute to the problem. Stress, lack of exercise, and a diet low in fiber will make you constipated.

 

How to get rid of constipation during pregnancy:

The first step in finding constipation relief is that you drink plenty of water (at least eight glasses a day), eat enough fiber (like fruits and vegetables), and get enough activity (try walking for 20 to 30 minutes every day).

If constipation persists, a mild stool softener such as Metamucil or coleus can help. If you are taking iron supplements, these can contribute to your constipation. Talk to your doctor about possible alternatives.

Generally, mineral oils, oral laxatives, enemas, and rectal suppositories should be taken only after talking to your doctor.

There are many things you can do to prevent constipation, such as eating a balanced diet with plenty of fiber, drinking plenty of fluids, and getting plenty of the former.

 

Eat more fiber, including beans, whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Exercise regularly.

Do not ignore the desire to have a bowel movement.

Travel, changes in daily routine, certain medications, hormonal disorders, and medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer can also cause occasional constipation.

The National Academies Institute of Medicine recommends 38 grams of fiber for adult men and 25 grams of fiber for adult women.
